| Housing |
| |
How do I find housing information? |
| A good way to find housing in the University neighborhood area is to check out Orange Housing. This website contains listing of available apartments organized by number of bedrooms. The site also contains a great map of the university neighborhood area, for your convenience. Other sources of housing information are the typical sources, including local newspapers and the Daily Orange. You could also email one of the IST graduate student listservs to see if a current student knows of an available apartment or is looking for a roommate.

What is a LISTSERV, Why are they important? |
A listserv is essentially a mailing list of people who have something in common (i.e., program of study, or membership in an organization) and want to communicate through e-mail. Within IST, there is a listserv for each graduate program (ISTTNM, ISTIM, ISTMSLIS). These are used to keep students up to date on events and news relevant to their program.
In order to receive or send mail via the listserv, you must subscribe to it. Subscribing is easy. Just follow the directions below:
1. Send an e-mail message to the listserv software program at listserv@listserv.syr.edu.
The body of the message must contain specific information.
a. You must include the word SUB to indicate you are subscribing to a list.
b. You must indicate which list you want to subscribe to, i.e. ISTIM.
c. You must include your first and last name.
So the body of your e-mail message should look like this:
SUB ListName Your Name
2. Sometimes, depending on how the list is set up, you will receive an e-mail message
requiring you to confirm within 24 hours your request to subscribe. If you receive this
request, follow the instructions for confirming and your subscription will be complete.

| Funding |

How can I find out more about funding possibilities? |
Take a good look at website
of the Graduate
Students Council it maintains a funding database. Many of the
funding opportunities have early deadlines, so have a look at this
site well before you arrive at Syracuse University.
Many graduate assistantships are also listed by the Graduate School at their office on the third floor of Bowne Hall. If you do not get an assistantship before you arrive at IST, be sure to apply for assistantships in the following semesters (check with the student services office for procedures on how to apply for aid).
You can also leave your resume with other departments that are often looking for graduate assistants such as Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering Management.
There are many other places on campus which regularly employ graduate students especially those with strong technical skills, such as the following:
- Athletic Department (make it a point to go to their offices in Manley Fieldhouse)
- Information Institute of Syracuse on Skytop Road, South Campus.
- Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) located in Newhouse School.
- Computing and Media Services (CMS).
Campus jobs are listed on SU's Jobnet. This site lists both on-campus and off-campus jobs.

What is ISTGO? |
Officers
IM - Kavitha Veigas (kveigas@syr.edu)
TNM - Vernetta Marquis (vymarqui@syr.edu)
MLS - Rebecca Shaffer-Mannion (rshaffer@syr.edu)
Comptroller - Ian Brown (ikbrown@syr.edu)
We are a group of IST Master and Ph.D. students, who have come together in support of the academic, professional, and social experience at the School of Information Studies. We achieve this through peer advising, mentoring, career development/planning activities, and social events.
ISTGO usually meets once a month, however, specialized committees tend to meet more frequently. See the ISTGO web site for meeting dates, times and locations. Because our meetings are usually held at 4:30, part-time students are encouraged to attend.
We have a number of committees coordinating the goals and activities of the organization. Students are encouraged to become involved them in as much as possible. Committees form and disband as needs are identified and projects are completed. There may be potential opportunities which include positions on the various ISTGO committees. Please check for vacant positions on the committees page. In addition, there are programs run by ISTGO that continue year after year. Some of our programs include resume workshops, internship panels, and faculty research panels. We also organize workshops on software such as Visio, MS Access, and MS Project.
